Signing of Ndamukong Suh confirms Rams’ status as destination team

Disneyland. Hollywood. Miles of sunny beaches. To the list of Southern California attractions, add a cluster of temporary modular buildings tucked into the quiet suburbs of Ventura County.

Suh cast an imposing presence Friday, seated between Coach Sean McVay and General Manager Les Snead, and likely will do so again when the season starts. Suh is expected to play nose tackle in the Rams’ 3-4 base defense, alongside Aaron Donald, the 2017 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

The Rams’ offseason spending has been so prolific that they needed to make a roster move Friday simply to fit Suh’s one-year, $14-million contract under the salary cap. The Rams released cornerback Kavyon Webster, who has been recovering from Achilles and shoulder injuries, and shaved $3.5 million off their cap total.

Meredith would have been a nice complement to Crabtree and Brown, and we heard at the end of last month that Baltimore was higher on Meredith than other players the team has recently brought in for a visit (Willie Snead and Michael Floyd).

In most formats, goaltenders will get the most points. Of course, this is assuming most teams will ride one goaltender through the playoffs. In the end, the Cup-winning goalie will get 16 wins and a couple of shutouts sprinkled in. If your league awards two points per win, that’s already more points than the top scorer of the playoffs is probably going to get. Malkin’s 36 points in 2008-09 is the only example from the past 10 years of a player eclipsing 32 points.

If there’s no limit to how many players you can take from each team, all your eggs should be in a minimal number of baskets. Pick your teams that you think will go far and take players from those teams. Sean Monahan and Alexander Radulov both scored better than a point per game during the playoffs last year, but that doesn’t help you much if they don’t get out of the first round.bills_050

Bengals Hosting S Eric Reid For Visit, “Real Chance” He Signs

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Bengals are scheduled to host free agent S Eric Reid for a visit at some point in the near future.

According to Rapoport, Reid has been “methodical” about his free agency plans this offseason and he believes there’s a “real chance” he signs with the Bengals during this visit.

This is the first reported interest in Reid since the free agent market officially opened last month.

He may have a very good reason for not being there Monday, but it’s certainly a missed opportunity at changing the negative narrative that has shaped his first three seasons as a Giant.

Here are four other takeaways from a busy day at 1925 Giants Drive:

Beckham’s decision to fly across the country from Los Angeles where he is training to be with teammates and the new coaching staff will be dissected for days and weeks to come.

It’s clearly a sign of his commitment to the Giants – well, not showing up would have been perceived as the contrary – and while Shurmur viewed Beckham’s arrival as a positive, he preferred not to make the situation in speculation more than what it was in reality.

“I’m not overthinking this,” Shurmur said. “This is the first day of work, this is the first opportunity for all of us to be here together and I think it’s important that Odell is here and I’m looking forward to him getting one day better by being here and I’m looking forward to him inspiring some of his teammates to get better because he’s here and he’s a terrific player and I think we can all learn from one another. Quite frankly, I’m looking forward to the players challenging me to grow, so that we can grow towards some of the things that we were talking about earlier. bills_022

The Bengals are still deciding whether or not to sign veteran free agent safety Eric Reid to the roster.

Despite being one of the more talented and versatile safeties of this free agency class, Reid didn’t garner a lot of attention. His first visit came with the Bengals on April 9th , and it is shocking it took him this long to even get a visit after hitting free agency in March.

Free agency has pretty much been put on hold with the draft quickly approaching. Usually, the only remaining players are veterans nearing the end of their career as teams would rather add a young rookie at the position instead of paying a veteran who may be beyond their prime. But that’s not really the case with Reid who is still a starting-caliber safety and someone the Bengals could use in their defense.

One reason people think Reid has waited this long to find a team is because he was one of the first players to show support of Colin Kaepernick ’s protesting during the national anthem.

The players know the science. When a player takes artificial testosterone, his body stops producing it. Instead, it produces estrogen. Sometimes, high levels of estrogen can be detected through the NFL’s testing procedures. Certain levels can cause failed tests. That’s why you’d use an estrogen blocker, though it can also cause a failed test.

Regardless of what the chemistry may or may not be in Davis’ case, the interesting thing is what it symbolizes to the players who spoke with B/R.

If an employee or contractors actions impact revenue, they absolutely do have a legitimate reason to ask about all manner of things.

Old Glory is always a legitimate reason to ask. If you disrespect the flag, you don’t deserve the privilege of playing in the NFL. Simple as that.

You mean like the armed services that pay for Patriotism before every game? That kind of special interest? I don’t have a beef with the military. I have had several family member and close friends either serve or are currently serving. Heck we all do. But does our military need to advertise themselves at the start of every football game? It’s not done out of Patriotism. It’s a paid commercial. I’m standing anyway but if someone chose not to I’m not going to get my feathers ruffled up. I’m not going to question their Patriotism. Heck standing up takes no effort. It doesn’t make you a good Patriot.rams_092

Report: Free-Agent CB Jalen Collins Suspended for 1st 10 Games of 2018 Season

Former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Jalen Collins, who is a free agent, has reportedly been suspended for the first 10 games of the 2018 season, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Collins was a second-round pick in the 2015 draft but only appeared in 24 games over the past three years. He was waived by the Falcons last November and hasn’t found a new job since.

Unfortunately, that was Collins’ last appearance in a competitive game, as his suspensions led to the end of his career with the Falcons. With another violation on his record, it will make it difficult for him to get another job in the NFL.

Opinions were split on the first three quarterbacks, although the legendary Rose Bowl battle between Leinart and Young loomed heavily on every scout’s mind. Leinart lost his job to Kurt Warner in Arizona, while Young mixed game-changing plays, bad decisions and inconsistency during his run in Tennessee. Young made two Pro Bowls but lacked the longevity of Cutler. As then-Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist documented in 2015, Shanahan wanted to draft Leinart, only for the Cardinals to beat them to the punch. Cutler would be the last highly touted quarterback to hit the NFL with a significant losing record in college until the Titans drafted Locker in 2011.

Along with the retirement whispers, Gronkowski’s name popped up in a flurry of offseason trade chatter. That was never a serious consideration for the Patriots , though, with NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo noting the team never engaged in trade talks over their monstrous tight end.

Amid all the retirement talk and trade rumors, Kraft — in his third decade as an NFL owner — has learned to roll with the punches.

“Look, things can change, but I’ve been dealing with this for 24 years,” Kraft said. “It’s always something. My job is to try to keep things cool, have continuity and attract the best people. And we’ve done OK over the last 24 years from where we were the (previous) 35. I can’t predict everything that is going to happen. There are acts of God. Anyone could be in a car accident, so we have to develop contingency plans for everything — coaching, players. But I’m optimistic about the future.”rams_035

Xander Bogaerts to miss 10-14 days with small fracture in ankle

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts is going on the 10-day disabled list because of a cracked bone in his left ankle.

Boston says an MRI confirmed the injury Monday, a day after he was hurt. The injury is a non-displaced fracture and won’t require surgery. He is expected to miss 10 to 14 days.

Bogaerts, a 2016 AL All-Star, left Sunday’s 8-7 win over Tampa Bay in the seventh inning after injuring his ankle while sliding into the Rays’ dugout. He was covering third base and chasing his own mishandling of a ball relayed by left fielder J.D. Martinez.

West also said: “The pitch prior to the strikeout, (Rendon) walked completely out of the hitter’s circle, which the hitters aren’t allowed to do. Marty said, `We gotta play. You gotta get back in there.’ Then when he called strike three, he threw the bat.”

Familia called this lengthy outing “one of the biggest saves I’ve had in the last couple of years.” He was limited to 26 appearances in 2017, after being suspended for 15 games because of a domestic violence episode and then going on the DL with a right shoulder problem.

Compton, 28, was raised in the Twin Cities suburb of Rosemount and attended South Dakota State University. A 2012 sixth-round pick by Washington, Compton has appeared in 71 career games with 15 starts. Five of them came last year for Chicago.

After four years in Washington, Compton spent the 2016 season with the Falcons before joining the Bears.

The 6-5, 313-pound lineman is expected to provide Minnesota veteran depth at both guard and tackle, provided he doesn’t supplant a current Vikings starter during the preseason.

Still not convinced each NFC team as a realistic chance to make the playoffs this season? Look no further than Philadelphia for an example of how quick a team can turn things around.buccaneers_089

NFL free agent rumors: Cardinals sign OL Justin Pugh to 5-year deal

It’s good to be an offensive lineman this year.

According to multiple sources, former Giants lineman Justin Pugh has signed a five-year deal with the Cardinals.

Former Giants’ OL Justin Pugh reached agreement on deal with the Arizona Cardinals, per team source.

Pugh was a first-round pick by the Giants in 2013 and has experience at both tackle and guard at the NFL level. He missed eight games in 2017 with injuries, but was New York’s most consistent lineman when he was on the field.

He was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2013.

Reds: LHP Brandon Finnegan (left biceps strain) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Monday.

Reds: Visit Philadelphia for three games starting Monday. Cody Reed will make his 2018 debut for the Reds. The 24-year-old is 1-8 with a 6.75 ERA in 22 career games for Cincinnati.

Pirates: Begin a six-game, seven-day road trip in Chicago on Monday against the Cubs. Pittsburgh went 4-5 last season at Wrigley Field. Ivan Nova (0-1, 6.10 ERA) faces Chicago’s Tyler Chatwood (0-1, 1.50 ERA).

Collins was waived from the Falcons shortly after he served the 10-game suspension. He was then hit with a four-game ban for failing another drug test.

He only has eight career starts under his belt.

“But that is more luck of the draw than anything,” he said. “I am glad we got through this game in a good way health-wise and did some good things and one more to go.”

Thompson scored 19 consecutive Warriors points in the first quarter, going 9 for 11 from the field and 4 for 6 on 3s in the period.

“That was a scorching first quarter,” Kerr said. “That was fun to watch. He had the arena pretty excited too every time he went up for a shot. He had it rolling.”

But Golden State led only 33-29 after one.buccaneers_073

NFL Draft 2018: Jets acquire No. 3 overall pick from Colts

The Jets are making waves in the NFL Draft and it’s still more than a month away.

The team announced Saturday on Twitter they have acquired the No. 3 overall pick in the draft from the Colts.

New York and Indianapolis will swap No. 1 picks, as the Colts will now pick sixth, and the Jets will give up the 37th and 49th picks this season. In addition, they will give the Colts their second-round pick in 2019.

The assumption now is the Jets are trading up to take a quarterback. New York signed Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in free agency, but both are on short deals. There are four quarterbacks who could go in the top 10 and the Jets were picking at No. 6, so there was a chance they could have missed out on at least two and possibly all four.

Dejounte Murray finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for San Antonio.

Trail Blazers: Turner departed in the final minute with a cut along his right brow caused by an inadvertent blow by Murray on a rebound. . Jusuf Nurkic, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds, received a technical foul with 36.4 seconds left in the first half. Nurkic was yelling at official Curtis Blair for a foul assessed to him on a drive by Murray. … Maurice Harkless missed his seventh straight game with an injured left knee. … Ed Davis missed his fourth straight game due to an injured right ankle.

Suh was released March 14 by the Dolphins. The Rams, Saints and Titans were three teams he considered, reports say, after the Jets pulled their contract offer.

Suh was a three-time All-Pro in five seasons with the Lions before signing a six-year, $114 million contract with Miami in 2015. He had 15 1/2 sacks in three seasons with the Dolphins and has made just one Pro Bowl since 2014.

Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips now has Suh, Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers on the front line of an already stout 3-4 defense.

“We stopped getting stops. We were defending really well up until that point,” Magic forward Aaron Gordon said.

Terry, the savvy veteran guard, immediately gave the Bucks a spark by forcing a turnover on the inbounds play after Bledsoe’s two foul shots. Muhammad gave the Bucks a presence off the dribble to help make up for the absence of the free-wheeling Antetokounmpo.buccaneers_013

As Seahawks purge roster, they purge their identity, too

What happened to the Seahawks we used to know Every day this offseason, it seems, they’ve done something to make them look like every other NFL team. They never used to look like every other team.

Now, you’ll know them not because of Beast Mode, the Legion of Boom or the woke locker room, but by their neon uniforms.

As for the aforementioned violence against women… that’s how the NFL does business, too.

Trevone Boykin was accused of viciously beating his girlfriend last Tuesday. It wasn’t until this Tuesday — a day after the victim went on Dallas’s WFAA-TV to tell her story — that the Seahawks released him, although they reportedly knew of the investigation into the incident soon after it happened.

Tate is entering the final year of a five-year, $31 million deal he signed in 2014. He’s proved to be a bargain at that cost, catching at least 90 passes each of the past four years and regularly finishing among the league leaders in yards after the catch.

More:Lions’ Quinn: Ebron’s release was purely money

In the two years under Quinn’s stewardship, the Lions have signed quarterback Matthew Stafford, cornerback Darius Slay, safety Glover Quin, running back Theo Riddick and punter Sam Martin to extensions in the month before the start of the regular season.

There’s no certainty whether Tate will join that club. He’s primed for a big raise, with guys like Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins pulling down deals averaging $16 million and $14 million, respectively, this offseason.patriots_107-223x223

Report: Chances increasing that Rob Gronkowski could be traded

It has been nearly two months since the New England Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LI, and Rob Gronkowski still has not committed to playing in 2018. According to one report, it is not out of the question that the star tight end could be traded even if he decides to return.

Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal speculates that Bill Belichick could toy with the idea of trading Gronkowski if the indecisiveness lasts much longer. One Bill Belichick-friendly source apparently agrees with that line of thinking.

I’m just going to do, like I did today, everything that’s in my power, Bonnafon said. Hopefully somebody likes me, and if the opportunity presents itself to get drafted, I’ll be happy. And if not, I’m definitely going to go into camp ready to go. Whichever way is fine with me.

Jerry Jones has been coy about discussing Bryant’s contractual situation, but vice president Stephen Jones has been public about the need for Bryant to shave his deal a bit.

More It’s become a sports cliche for evaluating NFL at this point, but the greatest ability being availability is true. Randy Gregory has been one of the more disappointing prospects in the last few years as his NFL career has been derailed at nearly every juncture in the last three years. The former second-round pick was once projected as a high first-round selection until he tested positive for marijuana at the 2015 NFL combine.

He then missed or failed as many as five drug tests after being drafted, which led to the Dallas Cowboys defensive end being suspended for the entire 2017 season. However, Gregory is now preparing to apply for reinstatement according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. There are still steps to take and paperwork to file before Gregory is close to going before commissioner Roger Goodell to petition for his reinstatement.patriots_123-223x223

Mark Rypien opens up on mental health issues, attempted suicide

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien, the MVP of Super Bowl XXVI, says he once tried to kill himself — the result of mental health issues stemming from his football days.

Rypien detailed his problems for Spokane TV station KHQ and The Spokesman-Review, hoping it leads to more awareness of problems from playing football.

My story is impactful because people see me in a different light. I want them to see me in an accurate light. I’ve been down the darkest path. I’ve made some horrible, horrible mistakes. But I’ve given myself a chance to progress forward.

Rypien said those poor choices included going to Spokane spas that were shut down as part of a prostitution sting in 2012. He also attempted suicide on the same day as his daughter Angie’s birthday. Rypien said he swallowed 150 Advil pills and then drank a bottle of merlot.

One of the biggest stories before, during, and after Super Bowl 52 was the benching of Patriots cornerback (and Super Bowl XLIX hero) Malcolm Butler. Butler had played 1,174 of the Patriots’ 1,197 defensive snaps through the AFC Championship Game (98.1 percent), per Pro Football Focus, but he did not step on the field on defense even once during the Patriots’ loss to the Eagles.

Bill Belichick has yet to explain exactly why Butler did not play but there have been a whole lot of rumors and innuendo about what might have happened on that fateful Sunday night. Butler got himself a nice payday from the Tennessee Titans in free agency and doesn’t seem to be holding much ill will toward the Patriots, Belichick, or former Pats defensive coordinator (now Lions head coach) Matt Patricia.patriots_016-223x223
